Mukesh Chand Mathur, lovingly known as Mukesh, was one of India's most beloved playback singers. His voice defined the golden era of Hindi cinema. Born on July 22, 1923, in Delhi, Mukesh’s journey from a modest background to musical fame was driven by raw emotion and honesty in singing.

EARLY LIFE AND MUSICAL BEGINNINGS

Mukesh had a deep love for music from childhood. He briefly worked as an engineer with the Department of Public Works but was drawn to singing. His talent was spotted by actor Motilal, who introduced him to the film world.Mukesh trained under Pandit Jagan Nath and recorded his first song “Dil Hi Bujha Hua Ho To” for the film Nirdosh (1941). He rose to fame with “Dil Jalta Hai To Jalne De” from Pehli Nazar (1945).

THE SOULFUL VOICE OF RAJ KAPOOR

Mukesh became the iconic voice of actor Raj Kapoor. Their partnership produced timeless classics like:* Awara Hoon (Awara, 1951)* Mera Joota Hai Japani (Shree 420, 1955)* Sab Kuch Seekha Humne (Anari, 1959) His voice perfectly matched Kapoor’s screen persona and added depth to the emotions portrayed on screen.

His last song was a devotional track, “Chanchal Sheetal Nirmal Komal” for the film Satyam Shivam Sundaram.His voice continues to resonate through generations. His son Nitin Mukesh and grandson Neil Nitin Mukesh have carried forward his musical and cinematic legacy.
